When he comes home from work, Karim’s stepfather Hans demands that Karim and his mother don’t make any noise and leave him in peace. After all, he’s the breadwinner and has to provide for the family. When Hans has no work it’s even worse, because he bosses everyone around and tells them what they can do.
What is your opninion?
- At least Karim and his mother can do what they want when Hans is not at home
- Domestic violence only occurs in poor families where money is short and people are uneducated
- Hans is tyrannising the family; this is a clear form of violence

Yes, this is clearly a form of emotional violence. Domestic violence occurs in all kinds of families, regardless of education or money, skin colour or religion. Every person, regardless of their age, has the right to live freely and without fear in their home.
It’s not right that one person gives orders and everyone else must obey. You can visit an advice centre to find out how to counter this abuse of power.
