Timo and his mother Maxie live with the grandparents. As soon as Timo does something that displeases his grandfather, he gets shouted at. The grandfather accuses Maxie of being incapable and Timo of being a total failure. Maxie feels intimated and cannot respond to the verbal attacks.
What is your opninion?
- The grandfather is the only man in the family and takes responsibility for everyone
- It’s Maxie’s own fault if she can’t defend herself
- Maxie and Timo shouldn’t put up with these insults

Perhaps the grandfather is not ill-willed. When people are asked why they insult or criticise others, they often say ‘I meant it for the best.’ But there is no reason to get at Maxie and Timo. Constant insults and put-downs are a form of emotional violence. If you experience something like this, you can get advice alone or with your mother on how to deal with it.
